Gout in the foot

If you are experiencing severe pain in the joints surrounding the big toe, you may have a condition referred to as gout. It’s considered to be a form of arthritis, and the symptoms include redness, swelling, and extreme tenderness.  One of the causes of gout is the result of a buildup of excess uric acid in the body, which typically collects in the joints of the foot.  Gout attacks are frequently present when an area is so painful the bed sheets can’t touch.  Frequent ingestion of red meat and excess alcohol is another cause of gout.  Additionally, inherited genetic traits may be a determining factor in the onset of gout. It’s important to consider scheduling a consultation with a podiatrist to learn about proper treatment options for gout in the foot.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot, Ankle & Leg Vein Center. Our doctors are always available to treat your foot and ankle conditions.

What is Gout?

Gout arthritis is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Symptoms of Gout in the Foot

Gout in the foot can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers.

Treatment of Gout

Corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
