A bunion is a condition of the big toe joint that increases in severity over time. There can be an enlargement of the bump that is present with a bunion or the big toe shifts towards the second toe and this can lead to overlapping toes with the second toe contracted.
As heredity and a person’s basic foot type will predispose a person to developing bunion deformities, the types of shoes that are worn will also effect the position of the joint.
The only way to truly correct the bony deformity of a bunion is through surgical intervention. At your visit, radiographs will be taken to determine the extent of the deformity and the exact procedure that would be required to correct the deformity.
Most procedures are done at an outpatient surgical center and most patients can ambulate immediately post op. Scar reduction techniques are employed for this correction as well. See the before and after photos below to view examples of our patients feet pre and post operation.
