Prepping for Laser Hair Removal: Dos and Don’ts Before Procedures

To make the most of laser hair removal, you need to prepare.

Laser hair removal is currently one of the most common cosmetic treatments provided in the United States. According to the American Society for Dermatological Surgery, it ranks second in most frequently performed cosmetic procedures only to neurotoxin injections like Botox.

While some people seeking laser hair removal have medical conditions that may foster unwanted hair growth, others will turn to laser hair removal after growing tired of waxing or shaving. In warmer regions like Florida where shorts, skirts, and swimwear may be worn comfortably almost year-round, laser hair removal may be particularly useful.

Once you’ve made the decision to get laser hair removal, you need to prepare. Here are a few tips for having the best experience possible.

Before You Go

Your laser hair removal specialist may have specific instructions for you to follow, but here are some general guidelines, most of which are applicable up to six weeks prior to treatment:

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Having a tan increases your risk of skin lightening during treatment. Whether your tan is sun-based, spray-on, or lotion-based, let your tan fade entirely in advance of your laser hair removal treatment.
  • Don’t Wax or Pluck: Using these methods can disturb the hair follicle, which may influence the success of your laser treatment. Shaving is okay and may improve laser removal outcomes, but stay away from the wax and the tweezers.

Upon Arrival

The hair in the treatment area will be trimmed with scissors immediately preceding your laser hair removal treatment. Depending on the type of laser treatment you receive, you and your doctor may both have to wear special goggles to protect the eyes from laser light.

Length of treatment will vary depending on the location of your hair removal. You may experience some redness after your procedure and may be given ice, aloe gel, or a cooling pack to help alleviate any discomfort.
